| It is incredible to think it is coming up to a year since Hillstream was nominated as a finalist in the first 702 Small Business Awards. Reflecting back and realising you must be in the planning stages of the 2009 competition, I thought I must drop you a line to give you feedback on the impact this award has had on Hillstream.
This time last year, we were literally launching Hillstream Beverages. Then in August, after the live five-minute interview with John, our phones did not stop ringing. Firstly it was the congratulations and support from people who knew Hillstream. In-between all the hype, serious business enquiries flowed in; it was amazing. Now, eight months down the line, when doing new business pitches, the first comment is, Wasn’t Hillstream a finalist in the 702 Small Business Competition? The power of talk radio is overwhelming. The exposure has been fantastic and we can comfortably say we have had a substantial increase in our turnover due to the publicity Hillstream received from the competition. Needless to say, the growth has been great. Another huge plus was being able to purchase the Softline Pastel Package at a discounted rate. We have nearly mastered the skills, and this package is saving us so much time, from stock control to invoicing. Over and above all this, Hillstream was fortunate to collaborate with another 702 Small Business Finalist Hlangane Recyclers. Hillstream and Hlangane Recyclers are like fish in water as we secure new contracts to supply water, we are able to offer a recycling benefit, and pass the leads directly to Hlangane; likewise, they pass leads to us, where they are able to. Surely this is the true spirit of entrepreneurship being able to help other small businesses and offer a value-added service to larger companies. In closing, we are grateful for the experience, the new business, the growth, and new friends we have gained through this exposure. None of this could have happened without the nominations of people who believed in Hillstream. Thank you for allowing small business to shine. | Having worked in Admin for many years, I became used to the proverbial four grey walls, no daylight, no lunch breaks, working long days far beyond normal working hours, conversing with my husband only in hurried or tired whispers before daylight and after dark, and missing my kids' most important milestones. Then Pastel Payroll came along and I managed to convince my previous employer that we urgently needed it. What a turn-around in quality of life! This is my fourth employer since then and I've convinced each and every one of them to get Pastel Payroll if they did not already use it. So, although Admin/Accountancy/HR does not allow for much free time as such, my HR assistant and I do get to go home at five, get to enjoy the outdoors before dark, spend relaxed evenings and weekends with our families and sleep peacefully with the confidence that staff won't have errors to report when they receive their pay. And the bonus ... at year-end we know we're up to date, up to scratch and up to standard with SARS. Bliss! What do I do with my "free time"? I thank Pastel for giving me my life back! |
| With the Pastel Payroll system it has made life so pleasant when it comes to the end of the month. All the calculations, deductions are reflected at a click of a button. The EMP 201 is ready for submission without any manual work. Monthly basic salary, PAYE, SDL and UIF deductions are recorded and is saved for your convenience. It produces ready-made payslips for our staff which we can automatically e-mail to them. This will work wonders for the end of year reconciliation with SARS. This new marvel has given me so much extra time that I can concentrate on other matters in the company. Thank you that we have such a wonderful package to alleviate our stress. |
| Pastel Payroll really makes life easy for all users. Prior to our company using payroll, salary advises was prepared manually. Preparing payslips and EMP201 Returns manually is very time consuming, for 27 staff members, it can take up to 2 days to complete. Instead of calculating the staff tax each month, Pastel Payroll automatically calculates tax for me. In addition, Pastel Payroll automatically generates the EMP201 file based on the salaries. Usually I only add staff overtime for the month, this takes me a few minutes, once I've done this, payroll is ready to produce the EMP201 and salary advises, what a convenience, from 2 days to less than an hour. Recently SARS introduced e@syFile - Pastel Payroll was able to export my IRP501 and IRP5 files. All staff IRP5 were exported into e@syFile and I literally finished the EMP501 process within an hour on e@syFile because once the files were imported into e@syFile it was ready to use. The quick and easy use of Pastel leaves me with adequate time to complete processing the companies’ books. Pastel products are up-to-date and aligns itself with new features of technology as soon as it's available - Updates are readily available on Pastel Payroll’s website for download. | Excel4Apps is a South African software developer and Oracle partner, which also has employees operating in the US, Australia and Dubai. One of our objections was to maintain a paperless working environment and the company was also looking for a system that would automatically update the company’s payroll system as and when expenses claims were submitted to the payroll administrator, HR manager, bookkeeper and Pastel Payroll that is currently processing our payrolls on an outsourcing basis.
We were introduced to the Pastel Payroll ESS (Employee Self Service) module, which captures all of the required information for each expense claim at source. Our employees simply log on to ESS individually and submit their expense claims online to me for approval, after which they are forwarded for processing and automatically updated on the payroll system. ESS keeps everyone in the loop, is accurate and saves time. A nice touch is that the ESS software also allowed us to brand our claim forms with our own corporate identity. Our employees can make on-line applications for leave, salary advances, travel claims, loans, sponsorships, bursaries or other financial assistance, making payroll administration a breeze for us and the Pastel Payroll Outsourcing Division. |

| Marouns Auto Paint Centre, a national automotive paint specialist headquartered in Troyeville, Johannesburg, with branches in Vereeniging, Benoni, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria, has realised significant benefits from outsourcing it’s company payrolls to Softline Pastel Payroll.
Formed in 1984 the group now employs almost 400 people and has seven payrolls.
